John Brown in the Slate Belt?
On October 19th, 1959, Newsweek ran a series of articles about John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, VA. The following sentence from that series prompted two articles which were partially or wholly written by Attorney Everett Kent, of Bangor, in the Bangor Daily News.
"When he (John Brown) operated a tannery in Richmond, Pa., his barn was stationed on the underground railroad."
The articles speculate that John Brown lived in Richmond, PA., in Northampton County. It appears that John Brown actually resided in New Richmond, in western PA. The discussion, while incorrect, yields many nuggets of local history which are interesting in themselves.
